It was the same way with me when Bootsie was sick last month. Problem is, you don't know what you are fighting until the basic tests are done, like bloodwork. Almost every test for her came back normal, x-rays showed nothing was ingested, and no parasites, so HGE was the diagnosis. Treatment was IV fluids, anti-vomiting and anti-diarrhea meds, antibiotics, and no food for 4 days to rest the intestines. The only other choices were euthanasia or watching her die a slow painful death for a week. I'm kind of surprized that they want your cat to keep eating food.
I had a cat a long time ago that had the same symptoms your cat does. That cat died after being at the vet for 5 days, but the vet said that he thought it was due to poisoning. Since the cat stayed out at night, it was a possibility.
